Fascinating! So many different varieties. Huge trees, with massive trunks and roots that somehow bury into and cling to rocks. Small beech trees that cling on to their brown leaves in winter. Affected by the weather and the seasons. Foliage of so many different colours. Foliage that falls to the floor to create a carpet on the land. Trees provide habitats for birds and mammals.

Some trees tend to exist mainly on riverbanks. Trees that only grow on lower ground whilst others favour hills and mountains.  Trees are an integral part of our northern landscape.

Certain types of trees can dominate landscapes in other places around the world. Eucalyptus were imported to Madeira from Australia centuries ago, nowadays it blankets the island!
